Niepokój, ogólny dyskomfort, niepewność, może nawet strach czy panikę. Że nagle odcięto nam możliwość kontaktu z innymi (choć przeciez odcięto tylko jedną z dróg komunikacji), że nie możemy czegość sprawdzić, że nie da się jak zwykle kliknąć i znaleźć się na naszym profilu, mieć nad nim panowanie. Oczywiście większość z nas nie formułowała w ten sposób myśli, ale czuliśmy się nieswojo, a przynajmniej do momentu, gdy z innych mediów dotarła do nas wiadomość, że problem dotyczy wszystkich użytkowników. Uff. Ulga. Coś mnie ominie, ale skoro nikogo tam teraz nie ma, to przecież i tak nic tam się nie dzieje.

Tak właśnie objawia się syndrom FOMO. FOMO to skrót od angielskiego określenia fear of missing out, czyli strach przed tym, że coś nas ominie. Strach przed odłączeniem od internetu, źródła dostępu do informacji, choć często nie jesteśmy nawet w stanie stwierdzić, na jakich informacjach tak bardzo nam zależy, że na myśl o ich utracie, wpadamy w panikę. Co ciekawe, podobnie jak w przypadku technostresu, nie jest to wynalazek XXI wieku. Pierwszy raz termin ten został użyty publicznie w połowie lat 90. przez Dana Hermana. Wyjaśniał on, że FOMO to obawa przed niewykorzystaniem wszystkich dostępnych możliwości i jednoczesna utrata spodziewanej radości, związanej z wyczerpaniem wszystkich tych możliwości. Brzmi zagmatwanie, jak to w świecie nauki, ale przekładając to z polskiego na nasze, w październikowy wieczór nasz dysmkomfort nie tylko wynikał z tego, że nie mieliśmy dostępu do informacji na Fejsie (i coś nas ominie), ale na dodatek nie poczujemy przyjemności, którą ten dostęp dawał. Co, do cholery, ze sobą zrobić? Gdzie jest moja działeczka dopaminy, ja sie pytam? Nasz mózg się stresował, ponieważ zabrano mu źródło przyjemności, jakim jest korzystanie z serwisów społecznościowych.

FOMO czyli strach przed odłączeniem i jego konsekwencjami jest jedną ze współczesnych chorób cywilizacyjnych i nie należy jej bagatelizować. W 2019 roku ukazały się dwa niezależne polskie badania. Jedno to „Młodzi Cyfrowi” prowadzonej wówczas przeze mnie Fundacji Dbam o Mój Zasięg, a drugie to „Polacy a lęk przed odłączeniem” zrealizowane przez zespół UW pod wodzą prof. Anny Jupowicz-Ginalskiej w kolejnych latach przeprowadził dwie kolejne edycje badania. Tutaj znajdziecie najnowsze wyniki, za rok 2021 – według ostatniej edycji badania wysoko sfomowanych jest 16% ankietowanych, kolejne 67% należy do grupy średnio sfomowanej, zaś 17% do nisko sfomowanej. W porównaniu do danych z 2019 roku można mówić o niewielkim wzroście liczby osób najsilniej odczuwających FOMO (o 2%). Ale! W grupie 15-24 lata tych wysoko sfomowanych jest aż 30%.

W klasyfikacji chorób Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia wśród sześciu symptomów uzależnienia bezhawioralnego, znajdują się m.in. objawy odstawienne, czyli niepokój, rozdrażnienie, niemożność pogodzenia się z brakiem dostępu do tego, od czego jesteśmy uzależnieni. FOMO bazuje na tych samych mechanizmach dopaminowych, o których pisałam tutaj. Nasz mózg nauczony tego, że smartfon i social media są źródłem przyjemności, mimowolnie kieruje naszą uwagę w ich stronę. To dlatego osoby z syndromem FOMO sięgają po telefon nawet w takich sytuacjach jak prowadzenie pojazdu.

Czy powinniśmy sobie wyrzucać, że czujemy dyskomfort odcięci od sieci? Absolutnie nie. Żyjemy otoczeni szumem informacyjnym, a pandemia dodatkowo przywiązała nas do urządzeń ekranowych. Ważne, żebyśmy byli świadomi naszych słabości i potrafili nad nimi panować.
