Możemy całe życie ostro tyrać, zdobyć doskonałe wykształcenie czy inne wyróżnienia w swoim zawodzie, a okazuje się, że świat dowiaduje się o nas z powodu jednej trafnej wypowiedzi, a czasem nawet jednego gestu. Tak było ze słynnym gestem Kozakiewicza i tak się też stało z Markiem Prenskym, amerykańskim mówcą motywacyjnym i edukatorem, ze znakomitym wykształceniem i bogatym dorobkiem (ponad 100 publikacji i esejów). W 2001 roku Prensky po raz pierwszy użył i dokonał charakteryzacji określeń cyfrowi tubylcy (digital natives) i cyfrowi imigranci (digital immigrants). Aaaand… bang! Zatrybiło! Określenia Prenskyego trafiły do Oxford English Dictionary, a świat doznał oświecenia, jak to zwykle bywa, gdy nagle ktoś daje nam do ręki miarkę do zjawisk złożonych i trudnych do zamknięcia w dotychczas funkcjonujących ramach.

Linię podziału, którą zaproponował Prensky, stanowi czas inicjacji internetowej. Cyfrowi tubylcy to pokolenie, które dorastało już w czasach swobodnego dostępu do internetu i nowych technologii, uważając je za naturalny element swojego otoczenia. A cyfrowi imigranci w świat internetu weszli już jako dorośli ludzie.

Goście przybywający na obcą ziemię i muszący ogarnąć zupełnie nową, nieznaną dotychczas rzeczywistość. Ona ich oczywiście zachwyca swoimi możliwościami, ale też przeraża. Żadna wcześniejsza zmiana za ich życia nie była tak diametralna i tak szybka.

Prensky wskazuje jako graniczny rok urodzenia 1980. Moim zdaniem granica znajduje się dekadę później, przynajmniej w naszych polskich realiach. Dopiero dzieciaki urodzone po 1990 roku miały naprawdę wczesne doświadczenia z korzystaniem z internetu i można mówić o tym, że był on stałym elementem naszego życia. Bo błagam, chyba zgodzicie się ze mną, że za naszych czasów wciaż jednak trzeszczący modem czy czekanie w kolejkach do kafejki internetowej nie było raczej czymś powszechnym. (Właśnie uświadomiłam sobie, że muszę chyba opracować pytanie „Co to jest kafejka internetowa” na wypadek, gdyby zaplątali się tu jacyś cyfrowi tubylcy.)

Myślę, że intuicyjnie czujecie już różnicę między cyfrowymi tubylcami i imigrantami. Wynikają one przede wszystkim ze zmian, jakie w pracy naszego mózgu wywołuje kontakt z urządzeniami ekranowymi, zwłaszcza kontakt nadmiarowy czy wręcz nałogowy. Piszę o tym w osobnym wpisie „Jak internet i smartfony działają na nasz mózg?”. W skrócie, pokolenie obcujące od najmłodszych lat z urządzeniami ekranowymi jest przyzwyczajone do konsumpcji krótkich tekstów, za to chętnie ogląda filmy i dużo słucha materiałów dźwiękowych. To pokolenie natychmiastowej gratyfikacji – to, czego chcą, załatwiają kliknięciem kciuka. Dlatego świat rzeczywisty im „zamula” lub jak mówiła młodzież podczas zdalnej edukacji używając języka gier cyfrowych, rzeczywistość „laguje”. Nie są przyzwyczajeni do monotonii, długich tekstów, mają problemy z koncentracją na nich. Ich mózgi szybko się rozpraszają. Za to znakomicie radzą sobie w świecie nowych technologii, poruszając się w nich intuicyjnie, nawet gdy robią to pierwszy raz. W przeciwieństwie do cyfrowych imigrantów, którzy bardzo różnie odnaleźli się w nowej rzeczywistości. Dwie dekady po klasyfikcaji Prenskyego pewnie wielu cyfrowych imigrantów ma już problem z koncentracją, jednak wciąż gro ludzi urodzonych przed 1990 rokiem podchodzi do nowych technologii z rezerwą.

W Wikipedii znajdziecie ciekawą klasyfikację różnic pomiędzy cyfrowymi imigrantami i tubylcami. Jednak dwadzieścia lat po pierwszym rozróżnieniu cyfrowych tubylców od imigrantów pewne różnice powoli się zacierają. Starsi użytkownicy internetu nie tylko zdążyli się już oswoić ze smartfonami, ale także zaczęli równie nałogowo z nich korzystać. Dlatego na przykład preferowanie wideo i audio zamiast tekstu nie stanowi już tak wyraźnej różnicy. Może dlatego wielu podważa ten podział. Są jednak sfery, które wciąż nas różnią. Jedna z nich, na którą często zwracam uwagę, to brak możliwości transferu doświadczeń między pokoleniami. Inaczej uczyliśmy się budować relacje, komunikować się i uczyć.

Dlatego ja lubię używać tego podziału. Może w świecie naukowych dyskusji jest na tyle czasu, by rozpisywać się nad złożonością świata, ale gdy trzeba na antenie albo podczas ograniczonego czasem szkolenia zobrazować ludziom, dlaczego tak bardzo my, dorośli, różnimy się od naszych dzieci w postrzeganiu nowych technologii, stary mądry Prensky jest naprawdę pomocny.

Co z tego dla nas wynika? Ano nauka, że nowe technologie ciągle się zmieniają i idą za nami pokolenia, które wchodzą w nie zupełnie inaczej niż my. Nie zatrzymamy już tych zmian, nie sprawimy, że masowo wrócą do czytania długich tekstów i zostawią jutjuby i gry cyfrowe. Nie są od nas gorsi ani lepsi. Są ludźmi swoich czasów. Nie pozostaje nam nic innego jak próbować tę inność rozumieć i pomóc im korzystać z nowych technologii w zdrowy sposób. To szczególnie ważne w przypadku rodziców i nauczycieli, dla których rozumienie świata swoich dzieci i uczniów jest przecież kluczowe, aby przygotować ich do wejścia w dorosłe życie. Nie wiem jak Wy, ale gdy ja dowiaduję się jakichś faktów o zachowaniach dzieci i nastolatków w sieci, często jestem zdumiona jak różnią się od tego, co mi się w y d a w a ł o, że oni tam robią. Macie tak?
